Sat-Chit-Ananda and the Quantum Plot Twist
The Ancient Equation of Existence
Dear UnMinders,
There is a curious situation unfolding in the universe.
For thousands of years, the sages of Vedanta sat quietly in forests, looked inward, and concluded something so outrageous it would make most scientists spit out their coffee.
They said,
Reality is Sat-Chit-Ananda.
Pure existence.
Pure consciousness.
Pure bliss.
In other words, the universe is not merely stuff.
It is aware stuff.
Actually, scratch that.
Vedanta would say the universe is awareness wearing the costume of stuff.
Naturally, when modern science arrived with microscopes, telescopes, and particle accelerators, the early assumption was, “Let’s prove those mystical fellows wrong.”
Science rolled up its sleeves and began dissecting reality with admirable enthusiasm.
Atoms were smashed.
Particles were measured.
Equations were written.
And then something very awkward happened.
Reality stopped behaving like matter.
For centuries, physics believed the universe was made of tiny billiard balls. Atoms were thought to be solid particles bouncing around like colourful marbles.
Then quantum mechanics arrived and politely announced, “About those billiard balls… they don’t actually exist.”
What scientists discovered was astonishing.
Atoms are mostly empty space.
Inside them, electrons do not behave like particles at all.
They behave like probability clouds.
Sometimes they appear as particles.
Sometimes as waves.
Sometimes they seem to be in multiple places simultaneously, performing what can only be described as quantum acrobatics.
Physicist Richard Feynman once admitted, “If you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don’t understand quantum mechanics.”
Translation: Reality is weirder than the average Tuesday afternoon in a Zen monastery.
Sat | Existence as the Fundamental Field
Let us begin with Sat, the first component of Sat–Chit–Ananda.
Sat means pure being.
According to Vedanta, existence itself is the ultimate substance of the universe.
Not matter.
Not energy.
Being.
Now here is where physics becomes interesting.
Modern quantum field theory tells us something remarkably similar.
The universe is not made of particles.
It is made of fields.
Electrons are excitations in the electron field.
Photons are ripples in the electromagnetic field.
Even empty space is not empty.
It seethes with quantum fluctuations, tiny bursts of energy appearing and disappearing like salted-caramel popcorn.
Physicists now suspect that what we call particles are merely temporary vibrations in underlying fields.
Vedanta nods slowly and says, “Yes. Reality is not objects.
Reality is one underlying existence expressing itself in many forms.”
The Upanishads called that underlying field - Brahman.
Chit | Consciousness Enters the Laboratory
Now we arrive at the truly uncomfortable part for materialism.
Chit means consciousness.
Not brain activity.
Not thoughts.
But the pure awareness in which all experience appears.
Vedanta claims consciousness is not produced by the brain.
The brain is simply a receiver, like a radio tuning into a broadcast.
For centuries, science rejected this idea with the confidence of a cat knocking things off tables. But then quantum mechanics introduced a puzzle known as the observer problem.
Experiments such as the famous double-slit experiment revealed something baffling.
Particles behave like waves… until they are observed.
Once measured, they behave like particles.
Observation seems to collapse the wave function.
Now physicists are still debating what this means, and caution is necessary. No serious scientist claims consciousness literally creates reality in a magical sense.
But the discovery forced science to admit something astonishing.
Observation plays a fundamental role in the behaviour of reality.
The observer cannot be neatly separated from the observed.
Vedanta quietly sips tea and says, “Welcome to Chit.”
The Hard Problem of Consciousness
Modern neuroscience has encountered another puzzle.
Philosopher David Chalmers famously called it, The Hard Problem of Consciousness.
We can explain brain activity. We can map neurons.
We can watch electrical signals dancing through the cortex like caffeinated fireflies.
But none of this explains why experience exists at all.
Why does a brain process produce the taste of mango, the colour red, or the feeling of love?
Why is there an inner world?
Materialism has no satisfying answer.
Vedanta proposes a radical solution,
Consciousness is not produced by matter.
Matter appears within consciousness.
This flips the entire scientific narrative upside down.
Instead of consciousness emerging from the universe…
The universe emerges within consciousness.
Ananda | The Strange Benevolence of the Cosmos
Finally, we reach Ananda.
Bliss.
This is not the giddy happiness of winning the lottery or finding extra fries at the bottom of the bag.
Ananda is the intrinsic harmony of existence itself.
The deep order underlying chaos.
Physics, once again, reveals something intriguing. The universe operates with astonishing mathematical elegance. The laws governing reality are expressed through equations so beautiful that physicists sometimes suspect the cosmos has a sense of aesthetics.
The constants of nature appear finely tuned for the existence of life.
If gravity were slightly stronger or weaker, stars could not form.
If electromagnetic forces were slightly different, atoms could not exist.
The universe appears structured in a way that allows consciousness to emerge and explore itself.
Vedanta smiles mysteriously and says, “Of course.
Why would the infinite create a universe in which it cannot experience itself?”
Science studies how the universe behaves.
Spirituality investigates what the universe is in its essence.
One uses telescopes.
The other uses meditation.
But both are staring at the same elephant from different directions.
Science dissects the orchestra.
Spirituality listens to the music.
Science maps the waves.
Spirituality dives into the ocean.
Eventually both arrive at the same mysterious shoreline.
Reality is not a cold mechanical machine.
It is something far more subtle.
Dynamic.
Interconnected.
Deeply mysterious.
The sages of Vedanta concluded something breath-taking.
The same consciousness exploring the cosmos through telescopes…
is the consciousness reading these words right now.
You are not merely a spectator of the universe.
You are the universe becoming aware of itself.
The galaxies spin.
Stars explode.
Quantum particles dance their probabilistic ballet.
And somewhere in this vast theatre of the divine…existence has grown curious enough to ask a question, “What am I?”
The Upanishads answered long ago,
You are Sat–Chit–Ananda.
Existence.
Consciousness.
Bliss.
The ancient formula of reality.
And if modern science continues its current trajectory, smashing atoms and scratching its head at the results, it may one day arrive at the same conclusion the sages reached while sitting quietly under a tree.
Reality is not merely physical.
Reality is aware.
And the universe, in one of its most delightful experiments, decided to experience itself…
as you. ✨

A lot of scientists have already concluded this: Dr Joe Dispenza, Nassim, Dr. Bruce Lipton, Greg Braden. Thank you for showing the comparison. You may enjoy the work of a friend of mine on here. His page is called Truth Within Logic. Relates to the marriage of science and spirituality.
