I smiled reading this. I sometimes think we imagine enlightenment as escaping ordinary life, when perhaps it's becoming fully present within it. Washing the dishes, making tea, sitting quietly, having an honest conversation. These moments can become profoundly transformative when we're no longer rushing through them to reach somewhere else. Maybe awakening isn't leaving the human experience behind. It's inhabiting it more completely.
I love this one! The grocery store is such a magnificent cross-section of the world! And this meditation really helped me realize its inherent holiness! Thank You, Manpreet Singh! Here's my poem about it:
(Published in 'Walt’s Corner,' a poetry column in
The Long Islander, a newspaper founded by
Walt Whitman in 1838)
The title of my poem is,
"Dancing in the Supermarket"
the ruffled foliage skirts of lettuces twirl
and dip, step us into spears of asparagus
and broccoli, stacked in its royal regalia,
trees tender in their pebbly green crowns.
Our bodies mime the primordial songsmith
in anticipation of Cruciferous Nirvana,
Cabbage Patch Tango, Mango Fun Pau!
Mellow smooth mushrooms nudge shoulders,
snug in cellophane-stretch containers that squeak
when our fingers forage, pluck them up. We run
back for a bunch of fresh parsley for bean soup
(We remember the bag of onions under the sink).
Experts say you shouldn’t shop for groceries hungry,
but this edible garden of fresh produce in our cart
colors our hungry love as we dance down the cereal
aisle, spin our nimble-footed way toward check-out,
dodge the bickering scowls of more serious shoppers.

I met a Buddha near the freezer section, but he just didn't know that he was one. He was younger than I imagined.
